Description
On the 2nd August, kick-off 3pm, Boldon Villa will take on South Shields FC for the Sam Bartram Cup. In the inaugural game, Boldon Villa beat Cleadon FC on penalties after a thrilling 4-4 draw. The game is held in memory of a famous Boldon lad who was spotted playing for Boldon Villa in the 1930’s by Charlton Athletic. Sam ending up signing for Charlton and then went on to make a record 623 appearances for the club, including an FA cup win in the 1940’s. A few years ago, Charlton fans raised enough money to build a bronze statue of Sam to be erected outside their ground, “the Valley”.

Last years event also saw a young people’s team play a team of workers and parents as a build up to the game. Unfortunately, the young people are this year down at Charlton’s to take in a game and stadium tour as part of their London trip. This trip was to show the young people how daunting it would have been for Sam to leave the area and move to the big city. It is also a reward for the young people’s hard work they have done with the youth project. Sam’s daughter, Moira Bartram, also travelled from Canada to make the game. This year, Marion Muncey, Sam’s niece, will try and make the game if her health is good enough, and she will present the new strips, medals and trophy to the players.

The trip to London means that the youth service will not be able to help the event as much as they world have liked. The Neighbourhood management team have donated a set of new strips to Boldon Villa and will arrange for medals to be made for the players involved. A programme will also be made and help will be provided in arranging a fundraising raffle on the day.

The “villa” are going to run this game and use it as a fundraising event for them that will also work closely with the Youth Service, neighbourhood management team and the local community. The Youth Service and Neighbourhood management team are funded in a partnership between Home Housing and South Tyneside Council.
