Rubbish has been dumped, what can be done? When rubbish has been dumped on the Public Highway (this includes most roads, back lanes and footpaths) it should be reported to the Cleansing Department as Abandoned Waste by telephoning 4277000 giving a brief description and accurate location e.g. nearest house address and removal will be undertaken within 48 hrs. When rubbish has been dumped on private land legal powers to have the accumulations removed depend on the nature of the dumped items. If the waste is likely to become a food source for vermin e.g. rats, mice or flies then there are legal powers to force owners or occupiers of the land to clear and dispose of the rubbish. Unfortunately the persons who dump the rubbish are not always easily traced otherwise prosecution proceedings could be taken against them. Irrespective of the nature of the rubbish we would always contact the owner or occupier of the land to encourage them to have the rubbish removed. You could also report this to Stephen Thompson who will liase with the council to address the issue Name: Environmental Health Tel: 0191 427 1717 Email: environmental.health@southtyneside.gov.uk Stephen.thompson@homrgroup.org.uk 0191 5371120
