Can I have a bonfire in my garden?

Yes, if you really need to. We would prefer that you dispose of garden waste in other ways that do not impact badly on the local environment - either by taking it to the Civic Amenity site at Middlefields, or asking the Council to collect it and dispose of it for you, or you could compost it.
If you do decide to burn your waste you should take precautions to prevent a nuisance to your neighbours. Only burn dry material, in small quantities, and never leave the fire to smoulder. Be aware of the wind direction and don't pick a heavy damp evening to burn.
There has long been a belief that bonfires can only be lit after 6 pm - this is not correct, and in fact sometimes weather conditions are far from ideal late in the evening. There is also some confusion about the effect of Smoke Control Orders - these do not deal with garden bonfires, but rather only place restrictions on smoke from chimneys of buildings.
If you have a problem with a neighbour having regular bonfires then please email or telephone the Environmental Health division of Neighbourhood Services using the details below.
Alternatively you can write to us, or come to the reception desk on the first floor of the Central Library in South Shields.
