After the demolition of John Street and Charles Street (Even numbers only 94-188) the land will be made available for a new Housing development. The local authority, South Tyneside Council are currently marketing the site to prospective developers. The local Boldon Partnership, which has 4 members from the Boldon Residents Association, will then help to choose the new developer based on plans submitted by the developers and on the environmental and physical appearance of the plans.
The development will also have to be self financing and this will limit the amount of social housing that will be created within the new development. Why not join the Boldon Newtown Residents Association and help shape the future of your community. If you would like further information on the development, or would like information on how to join the residents association, please contact Mark Burrell on 0191 519 3888 or e-mail mark.burrell@homegroup.org.uk
Housing Accreditation Scheme
South Tyneside council have recently set up a new project to encourage landlords to maintain and upgrade their properties to a good standard. The Private Rented Accreditation Scheme is deigned to provide both landlords and tenants with greater security. Tenants are promised safe and well maintained homes and the landlords can be supplied with vetted tenants and offer their membership of the scheme as a sign that they are a responsible landlord.
Check the Links section to visit the Accrediation scheme website.
Demolition Of John Street
Demolition Contractor Owen Pugh began demolishing the properties in John Street on the 17th December 2007. The first phase is to remove all items which can be recycled or re-used like the bricks and slate tiles. Most of the timber from the houses are being sent to be used as chipboard.
The second stage is to clear the site and topsoil and seed the site so that a flat green field is left for the new development that will be biult on the site. Owen Pugh will also place a trip fence around the permiter of the demolition site to prevent entry on to the field by vehicles.
Warning signs produced by local children have also been displayed around the permiter fence during the demolition to warn children of the dangers of entering the site. The site is also guarded at night by security staff.
It is hoped that during the year, Charles Street numbers 94-188 even side only, will also be demolished to pave the way for an exciting new housing development offering affordable houses and new social housing for rental to local families.
The local Boldon Newtown Residents Association will help decide the contractor for the new development so if you would like to help shape the area, why not ask to join them or ask them to keep you up to date with any developments.
Private Rented Accrediatation Scheme Welcomes Boldon's First Member
A new scheme has been launched to ensure high housing standards in South Tyneside.
Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn formally presented an accreditation certificate to landlord Aidan Doran at his property in Arnold Street, Boldon Newtown.
The ceremony marked the first property to be officially recognised under the Private Rented Accreditation Scheme in Boldon. South Tyneside Council has launched the scheme, which is running for private landlords or agents, providing official recognition that their properties are maintained and managed to a high standard. This gives tenants the security and peace of mind in knowing that a landlord who has agreed to certain safety standards, while landlords should see growing demand for their properties.
Mr Hepburn said, “I very much support the hard work that is carried out by the South Tyneside Private Rented Accreditation Scheme to improve the private rented housing sector and the benefits it brings to both tenants and landlords.
“At the same time, it ensures a better standard of living for tenants and their families, as they are reassured that their homes are being managed by a landlord who is committed to providing quality housing and management.
“Likewise, landlords will benefit because it should create more demand for their properties. It is extremely pleasing to see initiatives such as these are being created in South Tyneside, which will make a difference to the standard of living for tenants and their families.”
The scheme offers accredited and commended certificates, covering health and safety, general repair and heating systems. Currently being piloted in Boldon Newtown and the Rekendyke area of South Shields, it is hoped the voluntary scheme will be rolled out to the rest of the borough in April 2008.
