New Paving on Reginald Street.

As part of the wider plan to improve the major gateways to the estate, local residents asked for new paving, in an around the entrance road to the new Children’s Centre. The work was funded from Cleaner, Safer, Greener Fund (CSG) grant to Boldon of £156K over 2 years, and Home Housing’s Supporting Communities Fund

(HHSCF) award of £27,900 As you can see from the pictures of the site before the work, the improvements have really made a big difference. This coupled with the other environmental improvements, due to commence in the near future, will really boost the image of Boldon Newtown.
Paving and road improvements will not be extended to Charles and Arnold Street yet as the new Housing Development on the site of the soon to be demolished properties (1 – 16 John Street and 94-188 Charles Street even side only) could damage any such improvements. The council do have road surface improvements in the area planned, but they will not commence until the new Housing Development is complete. Actions from Neighbourhood Walk on 13-6-07

During the estate walk about it was found that two Home Housing Properties had been broken into. These were both on Charles Street. Ernie Lorraine from Home

got the properties secured that day and arranged for the Yard of a property in Charles Street, which was filled with rubbish, to be cleared on Monday 18
th June.
On top of this pro-active action, officers from South Tyneside Council’s Environmental Health Department have served notices to 21 residents with regards to harbouring materials in their yards which are likely to attract vermin. These properties will be followed up on over the coming weeks.
Community Park
Work on New Community Park Gets Underway
Work on an ambitious new community park for Boldon Colliery will start next month after planning permission was approved by South Tyneside Council. The Council have worked with consultant, Eric Anderson from Tyne and Wear Play Association over the last eighteen months to consult extensively with children, young people and families in the area to develop proposals for a large scale play and recreation facility on New Road in Boldon.
The proposals, that include a multi use sports games area, a wheels area for bikes, skateboards and roller blades and a children’s playground, were approved in January this year.
Due to the ambitious nature of the project, the park will be developed in phases and the timescales will depend on the success of various funding applications. Currently £100,000 has been secured through a combination of funding from the Government’s Cleaner, Safer, Greener Fund, Boldon Neighbourhood Management Initiative and Home Housing’s Supporting Communities Fund.
This will allow the first phase to be undertaken in the coming months. this will include landscaping the site laying new drainage and fencing erected. It will be finished off with new topsoil and seeding. Traffic calming and road safety measures will also be implemented with safety railings and a new pedestrian refuge being put in place, all funded by South Tyneside Council.
As part of the Council’s bid to the Big Lottery Children’s Play Initiative in September, it is hoped a further £100,000 will be secured for the park that will allow progress to be made on the multi use games area and playground. The outcome of the bid will be known later this year. Further funding bids are also currently being considered for other aspects of the park.
Thanks to everyone concerned for the progress so far, especially local residents and members of Boldon Newtown Residents Association.
Cleaner, Safer, Greener programme Summary
A series of environmental improvements in Boldon Newtown have been completed which has led to the area looking better and being safer for pedestrians. The improvements include new paving on North Road near the shops on the corner of Reginald Street which has brightened up the entrance way onto the Newtown Estate. The pavements are now safer for pedestrians as 50 bollards have been installed in the estate to prevent pathways being blocked my motorists and forcing pedestrians to walk on the roads. The bollards feature a design from a local school group
The major crossing point on North road has also had a bright new safety barrier installed to replace the tired and worn out looking old one which did little to warn drivers that there was a crossing point.

The funding for these improvements came from the Cleaner, Safer Greener fund (£156,000) from South Tyneside Council and Home Housing’s Supporting Communities Fund (£59,300). Both funds are tasked with regenerating neighbourhoods and the money was given over a two year period.
These funds have also provided Two CCTV cameras for the estate, decorative boards for void properties, Pit Wheel “Welcome to Boldon Sign” and allowed site preparation works to be done on the site of the new community park on New road. The Community Park has also scooped £100,000 from the Big lottery Fund to spend on play equipment on top of £22,000 from the Neighbourhood Managements team budget. Work will begin in the near future to transform the site into a park that can be used by the whole community.
