Boldon group paddle to success

Residential trip for group of young people from Boldon to Kielder Cabins

The Boldon Young People Project took a group 16 young people to Kiedler cabins for a residential trip and programme of activities. The group went on speedboats, paddled bell boats which they had to tie together as a team, bridge jumping, orienteering, night lines and many other activities which promoted team work within the group.

For many of the group, it was their first night away from parents and relatives and they had to look after their own personal hygiene and get up in time and be ready for activities. The group also enjoyed some healthy exercise and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings that the venue provided. There were also some competitive activities between groups, like the boat race, which provided some fun and banter between the groups.

The trip was arranged by the Young People Project and Neighbourhood Management team which is funded by South Tyneside Council and Home Housing. The trip was designed to get the young people from the area to work together and develop friendship between the groups. The group also experienced some activities that they may not have done before which they might wish to continue in the future.

The residential provided the young people with the opportunity to learn survival skills and they now understand how to read maps, and they could, possibly survive in difficult surroundings if they were ever unlucky enough to encounter such an environment.

Dave Johnson, Senior Youth worker said, “The two days were great fun and the group really behaved themselves throughout. They put some hard work in; they listened and learned many new skills which may help them in the future”.
