Boldon Young People Deliver the Goods

Young People harvesting produce from Community Garden to give to local community centre

The Boldon Youth Project arranged for some young people to go to the Community Garden (behind Asda) and help harvest some of the produce to give to the local day centre on Wilfred Street. The group managed to pick onions, potatoes, beetroot, cucumbers strawberries and they also provided some eggs from the chickens based at the garden.

In the coming weeks, the garden will also have a large amount of tomatoes, corn on the cob, lettuce, cauliflower, cabbage and peppers and the young people will help pick these and give these to the local community groups.

The group had great fun picking the produce and tendering to the chickens and learned a great deal about horticulture. The produce was also warmly received by the day centre which will use the produce to prepare fresh meals for its elderly users. The young people also got the opportunity to meet the old people at the centre which many of the young people have not been in before, or even new what the building was used for.

The Boldon Day centre has also had extensive work done recently to improve security and to also make the gardens pleasant for the service users. This work has been by the Boldon Newtown Residents Association in partnership with South Tyneside Council, the Boldon Neighbourhood Management Team and Home Group.

In total, around £15,000 has been spent on new fencing and a variety of planters, paving and garden accessories which has really made a positive impact for the users of the building, and the local community.
