Shields Lift the Sam Bartram Cup
Information on the 2nd Sam Bartram Footbal game.
The 2nd Sam Bartram Memorial Trophy match was contested on Saturday 2nd August by Boldon Villa and South Shields and Boldon Villa’s ground. In a tight contest, South Shields emerged victorious and won the game 2-1 after scoring two early goals through Johnson (14) and Scroggins (15), a quick fire double, before conceding a goal to Boldon Villa by Meek (19) midway through the first half. After this, both sides failed to convert their chances, mainly through good goalkeeping and the offside flag.
In the end, South Shields claimed the victory and lifted the cup, which Boldon Villa were defending after their win over Cleadon in February 2008. Both teams also enjoyed participating in a competitive game prior to their league campaigns which start on the 9th August.
The 110 fans on the day also had a good time, when not avoiding the torrential rain showers, and the game raised money for the Boldon Villa club. Both sets of players picked up medals and enjoyed a reception at the clubhouse. The trophy was presented to the winning captain by Steve Southern (Head of Youth Services) whose department has funded the youth trip to London. Sam’s niece, Marion Muncey could not make the game due to ill health.
Sam Bartram was born in South Shields in 1914, but it was while playing for Boldon Villa that he was spotted and signed by Charlton Athletic in 1934. He went on to make a record 623 appearances for Charlton and was never dropped. He went on to win the FA Cup with Charlton in 1947 after suffering defeat in the 1946 FA cup Final.
Every year, the cup will be contested for by Boldon Villa against a local team on the 1st Saturday of August, to honour a great local lad. The Boldon Neighbourhood Management Team and Youth Service decided it was about time this local lads achievements were celebrated and so devised the competition. The team also provided Boldon Villa with a new set of strips and match day balls.
The Youth Service also took over 30 young people to London on the 2nd August to take in a Charlton Athletic stadium tour and see Sam’s Statue and also watch the friendly game against Athletic Bilboa. The date clash meant they could not participate in the 2nd Sam game but next year they will be fully involved. Charlton Athletic also donated a signed goalkeepers top and set of strips for the first Sam Game on top of what they provided this year.
The Neighbourhood Management team and Youth Service are funded by South Tyneside Council and leading affordable homes provider Home Group. Other partners in the event have been Charlton Athletic, Bill Upsall Trophies and the Boldon Newtown Residents Association along with the Boldon Villa football committee. .
