Boldon Young People Project’s London trip
Weekend that the Youth Project took over 30 young people to London.
On the 2nd August, The Boldon Young People Project took over 30 young people on a trip to London as part of the Sam Bartram Memorial trophy events. The money for this trip was secured from South Tyneside Council’s Youth Opportunities Fund and the trip was a follow up to the inaugural match on the 28th Feb 2008.
The reason we celebrate Sam Bartram is he was a true sporting hero and was born in South Shields and played for Boldon Villa. He went on to win the FA cup in 1947 for Charlton Athletic and play more games for them than anyone else (623).
The group visited Sam’s old club Charlton and his statue which is located just outside their ground “The Vallley”. This statue was fully funded by fan donations and was erected in 2004. The group also took in a full stadium tour and then a game against Spanish side Athletic Bilboa. The group also visited the nearby street named after Sam, Sam Bartram Close.
The following day, after a rest at there accommodation, the group took in a Wembley Stadium tour before departing on the long journey back to Boldon. The group learned how daunting it would have been for Sam to move from Boldon to South London and also how well loved he is to this day by Charlton fans.
The group also had a great couple of days, and for many, it was their first trip to London and it was an experience they will remember for a long time.
